Apprentice Commis Chef Level 2 - Pembroke College

politicians

We have a state-of-the-art kitchen which had a 4 million pound refurbish 10 years ago. One day you could be working alongside a Senior Chef looking after Students and Staff, the following day working alongside the Head Chef cooking for the King of Jordon, or even Chris Witty who is a member of the College.

We offer straight shifts. The shifts are either 7am to 3.30pm or 12.30pm to 9pm, sometimes we will finish slightly later where we pay overtime. You will work weekend on weekend off, if you work the weekend you will be given day off in the week. Full uniform is provided along with 30 days annual leave, college pension scheme, cycle to work scheme and bus pass scheme.

Students, Fellows, and Guests dine in the 200-year-old College Dining Hall, where the likes of JRR Tolkien, Chris Witty and Roger Bannister all ate whilst being part of the College.

The Kitchen is situated next to the Hall split over 2 levels. All rooms are segregated, everyone who comes to Pembroke whether on work experience or a member of College love to work in our Pastry Room with Rebecaa our Head Pastry Chef. Rebecca came to Pembroke as a school leaver and has worked her way up to Head of Pastry. Rebecca was sent to Cheltenham College to complete her Pastry qualification.

We have trained many other Chefs in Oxford who have all moved onto greater positions, 60 % of the College Kitchen came through our apprenticeships scheme.

A typical day would be cooking lunch for College Staff and Student’s using lots of seasonal and sustainable ingredients. If you are on an evening shift, you could be cooking Student’s evening meals or working with a Senior Chef on High Table, where we have had many famous Guests dine.

Students are only in College for 25 weeks of the year. The rest of the time we run conferences; we have got some very good clientele such as Estee Lauder and the Anglo-Irish conference where we have polititions and more recently the Irish Prime Minister.
