St John's College has an opportunity for an apprentice chef to join their kitchen team, along with catering for students, staff and Fellows of the College, St. John’s caters for private weddings, dinners and external conferences. The post holder will be required to work within a large brigade of chefs, in various food production areas. So the successful candidate will learn the trade alongside working towards gaining a Level 2 Commis Chef Qualification.
Duties will include:
• Ingredient preparation
• Cooking meals through various different cooking methods
• Plating up and presentation of food
• Taking instruction from senior chefs
• Cleaning and clearing down work stations
• Working in a safe manner at all times
• Portion control
General
• Assist the Chefs in the preparation of food to the highest standard
• Adhere to portion and waste controls
• Complete a variety of tasks, such as making fresh bread, pasta and ice cream
• Adhere to time schedules in the preparation and cooking of food
• Safety Regulations
• Comply with the Food Safety Act and general food hygiene regulations
• Comply with Health and Safety regulations and fire safety precautions (including COSHH and
• the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment)
• Comply with the College’s Health and Safety Policy
• Be aware of and follow the College’s allergy procedures

Skills Required

Flexibility regarding working hours (the post holder must be willing to work weekends, evenings and help out where and when required)
Good interpersonal and communication skills (including an intermediate level of written and spoken English)

Qualifications Required

None required, however, Maths and English will be assessed as part of the interview process.

Future Prospects

Fixed Term 3 year contract with potential progression on to higher level programme once completed Commis Chef.
