Government Butler

Take on a career defining challenge

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) is tasked with building the nation’s prosperity and economic prospects, reducing conflict and supporting British citizens and businesses. While you will find many of our 14,000 employees in conflict zones and emerging markets, so too will you find a committed team working in London – with their influence being felt across the globe. It is here that we need your skills.

From official functions and large-scale dinners, to discreet breakfasts for a small number of VVIPs, you will be integral to the smooth running of a fascinating array of events. Joining a team of specialist Government Butlers in the Government Hospitality team, you will take responsibility for your designated events, seeing to it that every task is executed flawlessly. Working across a broad array of venues, you will brief and manage chefs, waiting staff and porters, dealing with UK and overseas guests while remaining calm in a time-pressured environment. When glitches happen, you will work seamlessly to resolve them, and you will use your foresight and experience to meticulously organise rooms, furniture, bars and table settings. Taking responsibility for the preparation of wines and spirits, you will account for the stock used, before overseeing the clear-up and break-down of events.

As you will be managing high-value stock items such as silverware and china, and you will be tasked with making orders for goods and equipment, this role requires a highly organised individual with the capacity to balance multiple projects. You will also be expected to manage the payment of invoices, make credit card payments and update finance systems, so you will need to be numerate. With a good general knowledge of wines and food service, you will probably come from a hotel, catering or private residence background. Excellent communication skills are essential, and you will have the confidence to deal with senior level guests and make announcements. As a collaborative team-player, you will enjoy delivering to the highest standards in a fast-paced environment. You will be a British citizen with reasonable levels of physical fitness.

While you will be working regular hours from Monday to Friday, evening and weekend duties will be required. You will therefore need to have the flexibility to work extra hours, for which time off In Lieu and overtime are available. You will enjoy a competitive benefits package (including a desirable contributory pension scheme) and you will have plenty of training and progression opportunities.
