Apprentice Commis Chef

LOCATION: Buckley Barracks, Chippenham, SN14 6BT

REPORTING TO: Matthew Lord

HOURS/WORKING PATTERN: 40 hours 5 days per week

DURATION: Minimum 12 months

A DBS check will be required and Compass Group will arrange this for the successful applicant

Well now is the time, as we have a very exciting opportunity for an Apprentice Commis Chef to join our team at Buckley Barracks.

You do not need to have any experience as full training will be provided as part of the Apprenticeship. This is ideal for a school leaver or someone wanting a career change. Apprenticeship are for everyone regardless of age!

Over a 12 month period you will be trained to become a fully Qualified Commis Chef.

Job Introduction
WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP?

An apprenticeship is a funded programme where an individual learns new skills, knowledge and behaviours in a chosen sector. An apprenticeship will enable you to work and earn a wage whilst developing and gaining new skills as an employee.

Alongside your day to day duties, you will complete the Commis Chef Level 2 Apprenticeship. This is a nationally recognised qualification and the primary objective of the Commis Chef is to learn and understand how to carry out the basic functions in every section of the kitchen. You will be supported through this qualification by your Personal Development Coach who will visit you at your place of work every 6-10 weeks. Dependant upon your Apprenticeship placement you will either attend 6 workshops including an Introduction day at a location outside your normal place of work or attend college on a weekly day release arrangement. All travel expenses will be covered by your employer. You are not expected to complete any of your Apprenticeship work outside of your normal working hours and will be given set time each week to complete your work.

Main Responsibilities
Based in the Kitchen at Buckley Barracks, Chippenham, you will work as part of a brigade of 7 chefs (including yourself).  This team comprises of 1 Head Chef, 1 Sous Chef, 2 Chefs, 2 Military Chefs, 1 Kitchen Porter and 1 Storeman. This team produces a breakfast service, lunch service and dinner service, serving around a total of 100 people per day.  

You will be trained and supported to the complete the below duties:

  • Working alongside the Head Chef
  • Preparing food using fresh ingredients
  • Preparing starters and desserts
  • Cooking meals through various cooking methods
  • Taking instruction from senior chefs
  • Cleaning and clearing down work stations
  • Working in a safe manner at all times
  • Organising the larder
  • Preparing kitchen documentation
  • Keeping the work area clean and tidy
  • Working to Food Hygiene and safety recommendations
