Interview with Alora Adie, General Manager at Cosy Club / Loungers LTD
Alora Adie, General Manager at Cosy Club shares her journey. From her early days as a glass collector to her rise to a leadership role, Alora offers a wealth of insights into the industry, career advice and the exciting future of Cosy Club.
Tell us about your first job in hospitality?
I got my first job in hospitality when I was 16. I was a glass collector in a train station bar in Newcastle. Fighting my way through the crowds to fill up my basket. I stayed for a few years and as soon as I turned 18, I finally got the chance to serve on the bar, something I was very excited about.
Has there been anyone who’s stood out as being a major influence on your career?
Too many to count. I’ve had some fantastic managers and coaches along the way who have contributed to my career in this industry. But to name a few - Jamie Baxter the master of distilling, he is responsible for my love of all things gin. I’ve also been fortunate to work for not only one but two female directors during my time at Cosy Club. Both have inspired me to be ambitious.
What skills do you think you need to be successful in hospitality?
Patience, empathy, adaptability. Anyone who has worked in hospitality knows that no matter how much planning is done, things do not necessarily go to plan. You have to have a plan A, B and C and be able to think on your feet. Working with the public is unpredictable, but that’s what I believe makes hospitality so exciting. No two days in hospitality are ever the same.
What’s the biggest change you’ve noticed in people’s expectations of working within hospitality?
I think work life balance. When I first started in the industry it was long days and nights, very few breaks, and it all felt a little chaotic. There has definitely been a shift within the industry. The hours may still be unsociable, but hospitality offers flexible schedules and adjustable hours. It can fit around most lifestyles. Our team’s wellbeing is a top priority.
Why should someone choose your business to work for?
We are very people focused and there are some great benefits within Cosy Club. Free meals, fair rotas, emotional and practical support, freedom to be yourself. We’re growing rapidly so have an abundance of opportunities. The business offers great development and career progression.
What advice would you offer to someone coming to interview for a job in your business?
Be yourself. Show us your wonderful personality. Personality is key. Everything else can be taught. I’m always on the lookout for those who can effortlessly hold a conversation, someone who shows warmth and is engaging. Those are the kind of people I want to be serving our guests.
What are you most excited about for the year ahead?
So much. We have new leadership and I’m excited to see the new direction of the business come to life. A new menu launching, Cosy Christmas Chronicles and my own personal development within the future ops programme. A lot to look forward to.
What’s your worst vs best experience working in hospitality?
Worst – Being the huge arachnophobic that I am, I had an incident recently where a huge spider descended from the ceiling rafters right onto a 3 stack of berry pancakes. Cue lots of screaming and knee trembling from myself and the child sat at the table. I was less than helpful in that situation.
Best – impossible to choose just one. Many memorable days. Every time you get through a smooth service, when you help make a special occasion memorable.
What one piece of advice would you give to someone working in hospitality who wants to be successful?
To say yes to every opportunity and every training day that comes your way. You will acquire so many skills that you can use throughout your career. Talk to as many people as you can, you will make some great connections and friendships to last a lifetime.
